Welcome to the first blog of a four-part series focused on the four different style categories available to you at Fasterpants.com. When you visit our site, you are prompted to choose between four different style categories; the first being Office Smart. So what is Office Smart and how can using a service like Fasterpants help you achieve maximum style and professionalism at the office, and maybe even help your career without the hassle of going to a store?
While wardrobes have always differed for professional and personal occasions, the Office Smart dress code combines a bit of both to mix style and comfort in a professional manner, according to Fasterpants CEO and veteran New-York based stylist Ben Wolff.
“When I am styling clients and working on the different Office Smart offerings on Fasterpants, I like to mix colors and patterns in different shirt, pants, and tie combinations that say style, fun, and energy,” Wolff explains. “I also like to recommend having a Sports coat or Blazer available, maybe hanging on the back of your door for that unexpected meeting or lunch, so there is no need to walk into the office in one.”
But aside from the obvious (looking great), there have been quite a few studies that show that dressing smartly at the office can help your career.
A 2014 Yale Study uses a sampling of 128 men between the ages of 18 and 32 to participate in mock business negotiations. The sampling was divided into three groups – one that dressed “poorly,” one neutral, and one in very professional attire. While the poorly dressed and neutral groups landed fictitious profits of $680,000 and $1.58 million respectively, the professionally-dressed group generated a hypothetical average profit of $2.10 million. That’s quite a difference, hypothetical or not.
In another study by OfficeTeam, it is pointed out that not dressing the part may be preventing you from getting a promotion.
“Dressing professionally establishes credibility and helps others envision you in a role with greater responsibility,” said Brandi Britton, a district president for OfficeTeam.
OfficeTeam worked with independent research firms to survey two populations: professionals and managers. Survey results are based on responses from more than 1,000 U.S. workers 18 years of age or older and employed in office environments, and more than 300 senior managers and 300 HR managers at U.S. companies with 20 or more employees.
The study provides several interesting statistics:
- 86 percent of workers and 80 percent of managers feel clothing choices affect a person’s chances of being promoted.
- Professionals spend an average of 11 minutes a day choosing their office attire, with men typically taking longer than women
